Snow forecast

Scattered snow showers will be around today thanks to steep lapse rates and a week shortwave. Across the south it will warm enough to change these over to sleet and rain.

However the main show is tonight. A clipper system will strengthen tonight as it tracks from the upper midwest into western and southern Kentucky. To the north and east of the track enough cold air will move in to change any mixed precipitation to snow due to fairly cold upper levels.

Ahead of the clipper the lift and forcing look impressive and should ring out all the moisture. with precipitable water values ( maximum potential precip) reaching .4 inches I expect all the potential to be reached in a narrow band.

The snow should spread from west to east during the early evening and end around sunrise Monday. Snow will only last from about 6 to 9 hours in any location and may be very heavy for a few hours at any location. heavier rates of snow will accumulate on most surfaces and with temperatures falling below freezing I expect slick spots to form.

Areas along and south of the low track will see light rain or a mix and areas north of the snow band will only see flurries.

isolated 5 or 6 inch amounts in southeast KY may be found as well.

Notice the tight cutoff to the north I’ve been working till the last minute figuring where the cut-offs will be.

This may double Lexington’s seasonal snow.

So I guess Lexington’s biggest snow of the season may be in March and to top it off, coming after a week filled with severe weather.

newest RUC would require north shift in forecast thinking. makes sense based on current radar. LEX would still be good for 2-4.
