quick thoughts

by

1. WOW! what a surge of WAA last night temp rises of 15*F for many at night. ECMWF nailed this, however common sense said it not would happen, sometimes the very unlikely does occur.

2. For the VA border counties of KY are highest elevations I’m going to make the wording for snow slightly more favorable by saying around an inch of snow for the counties of Letcher, Harlan and bell. Spotty coatings elsewhere maybe a few 1/2 inch totals. Snow showers for eastern sections of the state perhaps extending into northern and the bluegrass should last from the afternoon Monday into Tuesday morning.  Winter weather aedvisories are if effect for some and with temperatures below freezing slick spots may form Monday night.

UPDATE: Per nws JKL discussion I took a closer look at instabilty with steep lapse rates and a little CAPE don’t be suprised if someone hears a little thunder from this. Thundersnow would create locally higher totals.

3. We’re back above normal by Wednesday with the southeast ridge back in place a lakes cutter should track from the southern plains northeast with our region clearly in the warm sector next weekend or around the 10th.

UPDATE JAN 2 3 pm: Saw a report of close to 1 inch of snow near Jackson, KY which fell in about 20 minutes. Some locally heavier snow squalls are occuring further back to the northwest. Areas that see these may have snow totals form 1-2 inches in addition to spots along the VA border having the best chance for totals around and over 1 inch.  I’ll nowcast these in the comments section. Snow may come down very heavy at times allowing for snow covered roads in places.
