Winter Storm update 12:00 am

by

– a band of very hvy snow is stalled from Jackson to just north of Pikeville I could see a report or two of up to 16 inches b/c of this.

– slower changeover back toward the west have lowered totals slightly, however most of the region has changed over or is doing so now

– reports of up to 7 inches already

– numerous snow showers through tomorrow night the forecast totals include this

There is also a storm expected for christmas eve into christmas day, I’ve been surprised by all the wild shifts in the models from a lakes cutter with a squall line of thunderstorms to a snowstorm thanks to a track along the gulf and back and forth several times now. I’m not confident enough to make a first guess for the track. However this looks to be a powerful storm with lots of moisture that will disrupt christmas travel. hvy snow and ice and rain are all possible.

let’s just not mention surface 2m temps are below 32 for most of wednesday on both the 00z and 06z gfs. any frz rain will be a total shock for wednesday travel thanks to those who read this from lmk.

THIS SYSTEM WILL EJECT TO THE NORTHEAST WITH RAINS
BEGINNING TO IMPACT THE FORECAST AREA BY WEDNESDAY. THE MODELS
CONTINUE TO HAVE DIFFICULTY WITH THE TIMING AND TRACK OF THE LOW
WITH THE ECMWF SLOWER AND FARTHER TO THE NORTH AND WEST THAN THE
GFS. REGARDLESS…WITH AMPLE MOISTURE BEING PULLED INTO THE SYSTEM
IT LOOKS LIKE WE COULD SEE A GOOD AMOUNT OF RAIN.

    I would write this as

right now it appears a strong low pressure system will track from southern texas to our north and west at this time prefered the warmer ecmwf to maintain with previous forecasts however the gfs is colder and farther southeast with the track than the euro this would result in the potential for a wintry mix at the start wednesday which might create holiday traveling problems. Precipitation should change to light snow or snow showers for christmas day.

that’s not what I’m thinking anyway.
