sleet and frz rain threat overnight

by

UPDATED: WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY NOW FOR MOST OF EASTERN KENTUCKY, SEE COMMENT BELOW

current temps

temps  at the mesonet sites are in the mid 30’s to low 40’s and dewpoints are only running in the mid 10’s. the mesonet sites near 32 have dewpoints in the 20’s. areas from casey county northeast have the best chance for a period of sleet overnight due to the dry air in place, valleys that are below 32 may see a period of sleet then frz rain changing to rain. Travel could become slick for a few hours in some of the valleys and where temps fall below 32. traditional wetbulb calculations would yield lows in the 20’s overnight regionwide however there is a southerly wind component which should cancel out some of the evap cooling processes. Another note is JKL is a ridgetop site while the mesonet site is a valley location.

expected overnight lows

lex- 33

cin-33

jkl (valley)- 30

bwg-36

maysville-32

ashland-33

louisville-35

once the air is saturated temps will rise into the low 40’s.

    PATCHY SLEET POSSIBLE EARLY TONIGHT…

A LARGE AREA OF RAIN WILL OVERSPREAD EASTERN KENTUCKY TONIGHT. THERE
WILL BE A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME WHERE SLEET WILL BE POSSIBLE AT THE
ONSET OF PRECIPITATION LATER THIS EVENING. IN ADDITION…TEMPERATURES
WILL BE FLIRTING WITH THE FREEZING MARK IN SOME OF OUR MOST SHELTERED
EASTERN VALLEY LOCATIONS. HOWEVER…TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO RISE
WELL ABOVE THE FREEZING MARK WITHIN A FEW HOURS AFTER ANY
PRECIPITATION BEGINS…AND CONTINUE TO RISE INTO THE LOWER 40S BY
DAWN. GROUND TEMPERATURES ARE ABOVE FREEZING AND ARE EXPECTED TO
REMAIN SO THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT PERIOD. BUT THE FORMATION OF AN ICY
SPOT OR TWO CAN NOT BE RULED OUT AS PRECIPITATION STARTS ACROSS THE
AREA…ESPECIALLY ON AREA BRIDGES…OVERPASSES AND EXPOSED SURFACES
    SUCH AS DECKS AND WALKWAYS
