Winter Coming in Like a Lion Kentucky Style

by

1.  Map for saturday of expected snow accumulations ,low pressure tracks from the gulf up the east coast with temps cold enough for snow as some of us get clipped by the snowband on the nw side.

zone 1- flurries

zone 2- period of lgt snow sat am around 1/2 inch or so, minor slick spots possible

zone 3- a snow advisory may be issued here for 1-2 inches of snow saturday, i expect some slippery travels in this zone.

2. system 2 will be a weak wave along a frontal boundary however temps look to be below 32 with 850 temps above 32 and thickness values near 543, this may set the stage for a wintery mix Monday morning. I could see some spots getting up to 1/10 inch ice or an inch of snow and this could have major impacts on the morning rush, right now Bowling Green, Louisville and Lexington stand to see the most wintery precip. Temps should rise to 40 by days end.

3. my first map for the mid week system, a typical Kentucky winter storm one low cuts overhead while reforming a secondary to our nw. this would be a rainmaker with snow showers on the back end and maybe a period of snow or ice at the start.  notice this is not as amplified with the

jet as the gfs is, which has a lakes cutter.

– so we have a storm to our south with snow, one to our northwest with hvy snow and ice here on monday, typical ky winter weather folks.

paducah nws thoughts fro sun night-mon: this looks a west of 1-75 event.

AS FOR PRECIPITATION TYPE…SNOW LOOKS LIKE A GOOD BET INITIALLY
SUNDAY EVENING/OVERNIGHT IN THE WEST…BUT AS THE SYSTEM SHIFTS
EAST…LOW-LEVEL WARMING OCCURS AND THE DEPTH OF SATURATION LOWERS.
THIS RESULTS IN LITTLE CHANCE OF SNOW DEVELOPING. ANY PRECIPITATION
IN THE EAST MONDAY MORNING WILL LIKELY BE IN THE FORM OF
RAIN…HOPEFULLY THE TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN AT OR ABOVE FREEZING.
FOR NOW MENTIONED RAIN OR SNOW THROUGHOUT THE AREA SUNDAY
NIGHT…AND JUST RAIN ON MONDAY…HOWEVER…WE WILL HAVE TO MONITOR
TEMPERATURES CLOSELY FOR SOME ICING POTENTIAL EARLY MONDAY MORNING.

  4. mitchg Says:

the RUC rapid update cycle model 00z run fits in nicely with the map above.
