2:00 update: State of Emergency may be declared

by

1. this is different from the snow emergency in lexington which is for road crews. things are going from bad to worse this afternoon

areas north of danville to ashland will not rise above 32 till at least midnight if at all

here’s what to expect unitll then

FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET WILL BE LIKELY THIS AFTERNOON EXTENDING
   ENEWD ALONG THE OH RIVER INTO THE CNTRL APPALACHIAN MTNS. NORTH OF
   THIS CORRIDOR…SOME AREAS COULD RECEIVE LOCALLY HEAVY SNOWFALL
   MAINLY LATE THIS AFTERNOON.

   LATEST WATER VAPOR IMAGERY SHOWS A LONG FETCH OF WEST TO SOUTHWEST
   FLOW FROM THE SRN PLAINS ENEWD ACROSS THE OH AND TN VALLEYS. A PLUME
   OF MID-LEVEL MOISTURE IS EVIDENT ALONG AND NORTH OF THE OH RIVER AND
   RADAR TRENDS OVER THE LAST SEVERAL HOURS SHOW SOME INTENSIFICATION
   OF PRECIPITATION RATES ON THE WRN EDGE OF THE MCD AREA. THIS MAY BE
   DUE TO INCREASING LARGE-SCALE ASCENT AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING
   VORTICITY MAXIMA ANALYZED BY THE RUC OVER SE MO. IN
   ADDITION…REGIONAL WSR-88D VWPS SHOW WINDS NEAR 850 MB ARE VEERING
   TO THE SOUTH AT 1000 METERS AGL ACROSS MUCH OF THE MCD AREA. THIS
   SHOULD ALLOW FOR A GRADUAL MOISTENING AROUND 850 MB WHICH COMBINED
   WITH INCREASING LIFT AND SUBFREEZING SFC AIR SHOULD RESULT IN
   MODERATE TO HEAVY FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET ACROSS THE SRN HALF OF THE
   MCD AREA. ICE ACCUMULATION COULD REACH A TENTH OF AN INCH PER HOUR
   IN SOME AREAS.

   IN THE NRN PART OF THE MCD…FORECAST SOUNDINGS FROM 850 TO 700 MB
   SHOW PRIMARILY TEMPS BELOW 0 CELSIUS. THIS SHOULD KEEP PRECIPITATION
   TYPE AS SNOW. SNOWFALL RATES SHOULD INCREASE LATE THIS AFTERNOON AS
   THE BRUNT OF THE PRECIPITATION BEGINS TO AFFECT AREAS FROM WEST TO
   EAST ACROSS THE OH VALLEY.

again 10 hrs of this at least. my 1/2-1 inch looks very reachable right now which is bad news. areas about 30-60 miles south of lex already have had over 1/2 inch ice. get ready to loose power.

1. have flashlights, candles ready etc. 2. keep an extra supply of water and blankets 3. stay away from downed trees and power lines 4. have a battery radio ready for the cats game they will likely have to spend some extra time there in miss.

we still have hvy snow on top of ice tommorow the saving grace may be getting above 32 for a few hours.

reports

over 1.5 inches of ice in ark shelters are opening

thundersleet in mo

paducah a war zone from cantore’s live shots

let’s take this thing one stage at a time and nowcast every few hours.

winter will not let up

1. snow shwrs friday could easily put an inch

2. another snow threat monday

3. cold end to jan

  1. mitchg Says:

    Specifically, the state of emergency order authorizes the governor to,
    among other things:

    * Mobilize the Kentucky National Guard, if necessary, to provide
    assistance to communities impacted by the storms;

    * Fund operational needs and unbudgeted expenditures that may be necessary in the wake of the storms;

    * Request any federal assistance that may be deemed necessary;

    * Determine the need for emergency shelters and work with local
    agencies and school districts to utilize schools and other facilities,
    if necessary;

    * Restrict or prohibit transportation in areas impacted by the
    storms, if needed;

    * Activate trained counselors,

  2. Shane Says:

    Keep up the good work Mitch.
